3.5 stars rounded up. This second book in the regency faerie tale series had a lot of the same whimsy as Half a Soul, but lacked some luster in the overall plot.
I enjoyed reading the afterward because it explains some of the motivation and writing process behind the story — likening it to Cinderella, but a version where Cinderella isn’t a noble lady turned maid, but instead truly a maid from the start. And how would that have changed the story?, especially when she manages to catch the “prince’s” eye? Thinking about the story through that lens definitely deepens it for me, but while I was reading, I personally didn’t pick up on that.
I just enjoyed the lightness of the book, the easy pacing, and the whimsical writing. The faerie in Atwater’s books is so different from other books, and I find it very enjoyable!
