We couldn't pick up Book 2 in this completed duology fast enough — both Lib and Em read them both like one story and it was a wonderful adventure. The editing in both books is fantastic — no words or plot lines felt unnecessary. Was it a little bit predictable? Yes. Was it still so enjoyable in how it played out? Definitely.
The first book in what Libby calls "the perfect duology!" — truly a 5 star read for both Em and Lib.
Overall, a fun book with a good story line that I’ll be looking forward to completing!
Coming back to this series after an extended break was a little tough. I had to get back into the rhythm and writing style, and it struck me as a lot cheesier than I remembered. Haha. Not necessarily a bad thing — these books are light and funny and goofy, so it fits that mold perfectly.
This was Shelf Care Moms Club's second virtual book club pick! We were excited for a cozy mystery, and thought the timing was perfect with the release of the Netflix movie (with a stellar cast BTW). Unfortunately, this just didn't hit the mark for us.
Really enjoyed the lightness of the book, the easy pacing, and the whimsical writing. The faerie in Atwater’s books is so different from other books, and I find it very enjoyable!
Our first foray into Dramione fan fiction and we were absolutely floored. This book is so well written it's easy to forget it isn't Harry Potter canon. And for us, we honestly feel like it's a much more realistic picture of what would have happened if Voldemort existed in the real world. There is some dark content, especially in part 1, so check your trigger warnings!
An epic conclusion to the first arc of the Stormlight Archive series.
Lib has been a fan for a while, but this was Em's first Ali Hazelwood! This was another book club novella and we both really enjoyed it—especially the STEM aspects of the book. It's not set in the winter necessarily, but much of the plot takes place in the arctic, so it would be a great book to read in the colder months.
Em decided to keep listening to the 2 audiobook in this series — the dramatized audiobooks are all free on the Hoopla app.
Lib and Em read this quick novella for book club and it was hit or miss. Enjoyable, but hard to really pin down because it is so short and just the beginning of a multi-book series. Book 1 is the start of Apple TV's new "Murder Bot" series—book 1 is season 1 of the show.
I honestly don’t even know how to review these books because there is so much in them. Sanderson’s writing is flawless. There are always moments of just about every kind—of humor, deep internal thought as characters become who they are meant to be, major world building plot development, and that just scratches the surface. These are books where it is clear that every word on the page is intentional.
Our favorite read of the year — seriously — 6 star masterpiece!! Devney Perry has a way of bringing you along on the journey like you're right next to these characters as they experience the story. The storytelling and world building is right where it should be for book 1 in a series—a lot of it feels new and unique, but not over the top or hard to grasp. AND...this is how you do a slow burn right—our MMC and MFC are their own whole persons, and the slow progression of their relationship does falling in love justice. In short...GO READ THIS BOOK.
One of the reviews on the back of the book says “Half a Soul is the definition of a comfort read” — and we couldn’t agree more! Such a cozy, whimsical faerie tale.
This was our first official buddy read over on the Bookstagram channel! We invited our followers to read along with us and join us for a virtual book club — which was so fun and resulted in awesome dialog and new book friends. This is a SOLID 4 Star read — super enjoyable and really fun, especially if you love Greek Mythology.
